Present time has consist different choices of study and career
opportunity than past, so the current education system need career
guidance and counseling programs for student in schools and colleges.
Students are poorly informed about jobs opportunities; their
expectation and desire for the future are not always appropriate
according their own knowledge and ability. Career counseling is useful
for the development of career selection at schools and colleges level.
But I feel that there are some barriers too which affects the career
guidance and counseling programs and student & their parent neglect or
don't follow expert advice for appropriate decision making.
Some factors are following which act as a barrier for counseling program:
FAMILIAR CAUSE:
• Over expectation from child: Every child has individual and unique
aptitude, personality, intelligence and interest. But some parents
neglect their child's ability and force him to select career according
to their decision. Over expectation and strict nature influence the
appropriate career guidance given according to student's ability and
personality.
• Unfulfilled desire of parents: Some people do not achieve what they
wanted to be and compromised with situation and find their dream to
full fill through their children to be as they want; these thinking
also affect the selection of appropriate choice.
• Family traditional occupation: Some people involve in their family
traditional occupation and parent expects that their children will
also adapt same as they did.
• Familiar atmosphere: Circumstances of living condition,
socio-cultural condition, family context, interaction of family member
these are such factor which play important role in personality
development and nature of children. Personality have important role
for choosing correct jobs.
PEER FACTOR:
• Friend Circle: Nature of friends, their planning for study, college
selection, and decision for job opportunity also affects other
children. Some time student follows their peer group's decision for
higher education and other professional activity.
• Gender differentiation: The career interest of boys and girls
change littlie between 9th and 12th grades and reflect the widespread
gender imbalance in occupation in society. Even some jobs opportunity
also suitable for boys and girls separately like army, navy are more
suitable for boys while nursing sector is more suitable for girls.
ECONOMICAL CONDITION:
• Economic condition is chief obstacle in higher education for bright
student, most of people belong to rural area belong to below poverty
line or low economic status and cannot or hardily can afford costly
higher education. Lack of information about financial aid is also a
most prevalent problem faced by student.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAITS:
• According to some research study, student of high school standard
are more likely to prefer talking to their parents over anyone else
about their study plan; what subject to be choose. Friends ranked in
second in preference along with teacher and career counselor to
discuss about their future plan.
• School dropout: It is one of the most significant barriers to career
guidance is the school dropout. There are various reasons for dropout
like life changing incident like death of person, marriage, birth of
children, earning bread and butter etc.
• Problems of children with learning disabilities: There are student
which have normal aptitude level or above than normal but they don't
have normal educational understanding ability and find difficulties in
learning and study like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, ADHD etc.
These are psychological problems which affect career selection,
although these type of children need to be identified and
intervention.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT:
Physical development and health issue (like difficulties in vision,
hearing and so other diseases) greatly affect our behavior and mental
ability. Health related abnormalities consist negative effect for our
personal and social activity. A diseased person has become constantly
away from educational, professional and social activity; and also
effect self-confidence and respect.
MINOR AILMENTS:
Some element which cannot be consider as chief factor to affect career
guidance program but affect decision of student during higher
education and jobs opportunity. Some are following:
• Lack of interest in student
• Lack of transportation
• Distance of study centres and colleges
• Poor grades in examination
• Language problem basically in student of hindi medium
STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO CAREER GUIDENCE
• Public and government schools provide very limited opportunity for
career exploration and guidance in broad spectrum, although some
standard schools of private sector have started this type of career
guidance but not in a scientific process.
• In Indian context still now parents are primary source of guidance
and support for career and college planning, but today's occupational
environment and complex procedure of college registration, option of
various subject of study, selection procedure in colleges,
application & financing make both student and parents to seek career
guidance and support.
• Every student should seek for career guidance because every student
is not suited for higher study or technical study but have some other
talent which make their career successful, these type student need
more attention for their career preparation. We have lots of example
of person in our society who has not gained much qualification but
make their career successful in other field.
• School/college dropout is an important barriers , strategies for
reducing school dropout should be make, career guidance can propose
some way and play an important role, student who can see a positive
career future for themselves will have desire to stay at school or
start again study through regular or distance mode.
• Schools and colleges may play an important role in career guidance
and counseling, a strategic plan should be made for an alternate way;
schools and colleges can partner with parents and other counseling and
guiding organization to provide a career exploration and planning
opportunities. Other professional or working organization, government
employee, and other higher institutions also can provide a stronger
and ongoing career supports.
